Comfortable short boots or heavy "DocMartin" style shoe/boots round out her typically wardrobe. Tends to wear minimal makeup unless the situation dictates it's usage. The
Past to the Present:
Helena was born on April 7th, 2025 in Goteburg, Sweden. Her parents, Karl
and Lisa Lotjonen, both worked for the Swedish branch of the Militech
corporation. Her childhood has spent in the Goteburg arcology, living a safe,
structured corporate life, getting a nice, safe, corporate education, with the
goal of being added to the corporate workforce. Throughout her early years,
Helen's parents were never around, and thus, she was raised mostly by a
conjunction of her peers, her corporate nannies, and her older sister, Cecilia.
Cecilia, older by seven years, had shown excellent management aptitude, and
thus, was being groomed toward a position in Militech's managerial department.
Thus, Cecilia oversaw the home with efficiency and orderly action, and raised
Helena to excel in what ever she did.
Throughout her Militech sponsored education, Helena turned out to be a
bright child with considerable physical aptitudes. Unlike her sister, Militech
decided to groom her toward a career in the service of Militech's large army.
Further aptitude testing showed she would excel not in open warfare as a grunt,
but as a more specialized, urban soldier. Thus, throughout her teenage years,
she was instructed in (in addition to normal education) urban military tactics
and close quarters combat. At eighteen, after finishing mandatory high school,
Militech hired her on with a four year contract.
The
first year of her employment at Militech was spent in training, getting her
ready for service in Militech's EPPP (Executive Personal Protection Program)1
branch, designed to protect high risk corporate individuals from harm. Helena
was trained in all manners of protection and extraction. Due to her own
excellent appearance, she was trained as an EPPP escort, to move directly with
executives, protecting them on the spot. Here, she developed a preference for
small scale weapons, such as handguns and knives, over larger, less concealable
weapons. She also was taught several unarmed fighting disciplines. She breezed
through the training, and while doing so, also received instruction in the
primary languages of business and corporate etiquette training.
Over the course of the next three years, Helena served as a EPPP
specialist in a variety of locations, acting both solo and with full blown EPPP
teams. She also acted in a more offensive roles, being part of multiple
extraction teams and participating in other "gray" operations. Helena
also learned a bit more of "street" sense in this time period, and
worked with edgerunners and other such private operators during this time
period. She began building her financial assets around this time as well, giving
herself the overall goal of being able to retire from the security business
before she turns thirty. During this time, she also began to get her first
cyberwares, including many nanotech treatments (which are highly popular among
Euro-solos)She served the full duration of her four-year term, and then at the
end, parted with Militech on good terms. She placed her contract up in the
shadow and corporate markets, and was quickly snapped up by Arasaka.
Viewed by her as the quintessential Japanese corporation, Helena proved
herself to her early superiors as quite competent and able to do her job. She
enjoyed working in Sweden, and then later Japan for Arasaka very much. The whole
attitude and the spirit of the Japanese company she found to be quite
interesting, taking in very much of the culture and spirit (becoming a Zen
Buddhist and following Bushido in her personal life). She continued performing
admirably, and gaining more and more firsthand experience with Asian culture in
general. Having done so, she was transferred to the Hong Kong branch of Arasaka.
At this point, about a year into her contract, she was place under a distant
relative of Saburo Arasaka, Nagano Arasaka. Now, Nagano knew that he was the
only one fit to run the corporation when Saburo passed on, but he felt that he
was being cheated in the meantime at the Hong Kong branch office, so, he took
out his anger on his employees. A terrible administrator with a terrible temper,
Nagano constantly and repetitively gave jobs of increasing hazard to Helena, all
the while insulting her, be it due to her gender, her ethnicity, or her height,
no matter what she did, she always earned his ire. But, her performance record
was so sterling it would hurt Nagano to fire her and break the contract. So,
nearing the end of the contract, Nagano set her up. He had been giving her
increasingly darker and darker grey ops, until finally he put her in a black op,
a job to assassinate a small time local crime figure. Finding such work
distasteful, she none the less fulfilled her duty, taking the specially prepared
sniper rifle for the job. Despite the fact that she checked the weapon fully,
even her trained eyes missed the micro-fracture in the barrel of the rifle, near
the clip. When she had readied herself for the shot, she took aim, and pulled
the trigger. The micro-fracture widened considerable from the firing stress,
moving the bullet not out the barrel, but into the clip, which promptly
detonated all the remaining rounds, blowing off 75% of Helena's left arm. She
somehow made it back to the Arasaka facility, and was rushed off to a Arasaka
aligned hospital.
When Helena awoke, her old left arm was gone, replaced with a cyber
model. Helena contacted the Arasaka headquarters, and Nagano, and demanded why
had her arm been replaced with a cyber arm as opposed to a vat grown replacement
arm. Nagano promptly informed her that she had violated the clauses of the
contract by failing her mission, and thus, should be grateful that she had
received any replacement at all. He then proceeded to list all her failings, and
told her that she was too "unsuited" for the security business as a
"gaijin woman". At this point, she promptly told Nagano to "Suck
her dick.", and had her contract to Arasaka terminated. Having left Arasaka
on extremely bad terms, Helena began to work solo as a "street
samurai" in Hong Kong. She took on all manners of jobs, and quickly earned
a fierce reputation in the HK shadow community. She slowly worked her way up,
and gained contacts and allies. In particular, for her weapons needs, she hooked
up with an old military dealer operating out of a ramen shop, a Oikawa Yuji.
Yuji was a dirty old coot who took a liking to Helena, and acted as her weapon
supplier in the immediate year following after she had broken contract with
Arasaka. During the time, she frequented the place for the food as much as the
guns. It was at this point she was introduced to Yuji's assistant, Nakahito
Kohgen. Yuji had recently learned that Kohgen was fond of weapons and
electronics, and made an offer to Kohgen to work with Helena on a data raid on
an Arasaka-held company in Hong Kong. While waiting for Kohgen to decide on the
offer, Helena took another job as a bodyguard. Shortly after that job was
finished, Helena returned to the ramen shop, which was suddenly attacked by
unknown assailants. Though through the combined efforts of Helena and old man
Yuji, the attackers were driven off, but not before the shop had been destroyed
and Yuji died. Acting upon Yuji's dying request to go to take Kohgen to the
American city Angel's Flight, and hook up with an old friend of Yuji's, Ruby
Rhod, Helena took Kohgen and went to Angel's Flight.
Currently, Helena works as a freelance operative in Angel's Flight, often getting her jobs through Ruby, and watching out for the younger Kohgen as he begins his shadow career.
Update:
Initially, Angel's Flight was fine for Helena. Working with Kohgen on several varied runs made contacts and money for Helena. Edgerunning in the city wasn't all that difficult either, less stressful than Hong Kong had been for her. Then a supposedly simple run changed it all. An easy, almost routine extraction thrust Helena into a situation that even her extensive experience couldn't prepare her for...encountering the supernatural. Through a radical series of events, Helena's world was shattered...magic, demons, were creatures, and other denizens thought only to be myth and fairly tale proved all too frighteningly real. This was compounded with strange choices within her edgerunner group drove her literally crazy.
To compound matters, she had a run-in with her nemesis from Arasaka, Nagano further damaged her will. Although she was successful in the encounter, trouncing him badly, he made a death defying escape. This wrecked Helena's confidence and weakened her hold on reality. For a time, she completely broke away from her edgerunning group and isolated herself in a remote Northern California safe house she set up earlier. She fell deeper and deeper into the depths of her mind, as the fragile illusion that was her reality broke further and further apart.
But at the core of the madness, beneath the terror of it all, she found a truth to clutch onto, to hold onto. The truth was simple...monsters, magic, demons...they all do exist...but so did billions of people who could easily be victimized and destroyed by these forces at any time. This revelation scared Helena to no end, but then she realized something else. She wasn't powerless in the equation. Far from it. She could make a difference. Her body had been adapted by the nanites within her to adapted her to the rigors of fighting the supernatural. She could fight back, and maybe make a stand for innocent people.
Armed with this knowledge, Helena slowly but surely pulled herself back from the
edge of madness, and from the depths on insanity. Clawing her way back to
reality with a will forged from her old self and tempered by her recent
experiences, she became stronger than ever before. She vowed never again to
allow herself to succumb to such feelings of weakness and lose sight of hope.
She also made the decision that she couldn't fight the supernatural alone. She
may have worked solo before, but those days were over, she realized. There were
things out there with more power and influence then all the megacorps put
together, and she knew that if she were to stand any chance, she'd need to get
as many allies as possible.
Behind
the Scenes Profile:
What kind
of personality does your character have?
Helena is a very "professional" person. Her work and things
that need to be done get the highest priority in her life. If some obstacle
stands in her way, she finds a way to over come it. Not one to be held back, she
is very pro-active, and dislikes inactivity. She makes sure she is busy doing
things that need to be done. She keeps her feelings and emotions very
controlled, and dislike people who inquire to much into her personal affairs.
She is generally friendly however, and is personable. The only times she will
ever show dislike or distaste is in people she regards as unprofessional or
foolish.
What are
your political beliefs?
Having been raised and working in Socialist countries the majority of her
life, she supports socialism and some of it's derivatives.
Where are
you living now?
Currently, Helena is living in Angel's Flight. She has one main house,
and has set up several "safe houses" throughout the city.
What is
your current relationship with your family?
Helena doesn't keep in touch with her parents much, but maintains
communication with her sister Cecilia. No change.
How are
they doing?
Her parents are both alive, still in Sweden, still working for Militech.
Cecilia also works for Militech still, but has since been transferred to there
New York branch.
What is
your current social status?
Helena lives comfortably, but not well. Typically, she puts the majority
of her earnings into various saving accounts, preparing for retirement someday.
What are
your current religious beliefs?
Helena still embraces Zen Buddhism, but can not actively practice as much
(Buddhist temples are in short supply, so it seems). She still also maintains
her disciplines of self-improvement and such that were gained from following
Bushido.
What is
your current profession? (What do
you do for a living?)
Helena acts a street samurai (freelance solo who works the streets
primarily). She doesn't have a steady employer, instead, working on a contract
by contract basis. Sometimes, she will take campaign contracts (more than one
run per contract), but is now wary of long term contracts thanks to Arasaka.
What are
your current hobbies?
Helena is a collector of Japanese items of all sorts. Primarily, she
collects old samurai items (swords, armor, stories), old animes (like EVA,
Vision of Escaflowne, SMJ, etc.), and old music (like TM Revolution, Glay, and
X-Japan). She likes rock and roll music, anything with a good beat and lots of
guitar. She drinks sometimes, but prefers light stuff like wine coolers and
mixed drinks, and drinks within the limits of moderation. Kohgen also recently
got her addicted to console video games, which are her guilty pleasure. Recently,
with the change, she's also began intently studying legends and myths, trying to
learn more about the "bigger world".
What do
you do to relax?
Helena enjoys going out to the various dance clubs and such, and has a
fun, social time when she through with the business at hand. When she's very
tense, she instead prefers to close off the outside world, and do some serious
mediation and practice meditate forms of the martial ways she knows. She uses
these things to help her focus and bring her world back under control.
What kind
of people do you "Hang out" with?
Generally, Helena associates somewhat with the whole party-go'er/nightclub
scene, but otherwise, she is generally with the local shadow community.
What
skills or abilities do you have that are useful to the party?
Helena's training is group based. More importantly, as the proverbial "point-woman" of the team, she would often act as the on-site leader. She knows how to organize, and prepared a group for there job. She acts and functions even better as a second in charge, providing advice and analysis to a better leader. She's also a great operative for "quiet ops", because she has a natural dislike of excessive violence, excessive loss of life, and heavy weaponry. With her new body, Helena has become much more lethal and also able to meet different types of supernaturals on equal terms. More over, she has learned quite a bit of flexibility in mingling her old skills with her new abilities, which means she has a trump card over both the supernatural (by using edgerunning skills and tactics), and edgerunners (by using supernatural skills and tactics). All in all, her uniqueness of experience and ability is her greatest strength.
Behind
the Scenes, For The Future:
After all
the game sessions are over, what will your character do?
Keep working the shadows, trying to ensure her prosperity and financial
well being. Who knows? Maybe go out and find the right person while she's at it.
This has completely changed. Now, Helena will actively continue fighting the
supernatural. As long as the threat exists, and she's able to face it, she'll do
so. There can be no other way...
What are
your character's goals in life?
1.
Become wealthy enough to retire and live without fear of being poor.
2.
To remove the majority of the cyber ware from her body.
3.
Start a family, one that will last.
Learn more about the world as it truly is.
Increase her resources in the fight with the supernatural.
Try and find someone like herself, whom shares the same type of body and modifications (ie, cyber-evolved).
What will
your character be doing 5,10, or 20 years from now?
5 years...still more fighting...
What kind
of skills/abilities do you see your character learning in the future?
Probably diversifying her edge running talents, by learning some
electronic and medical disciplines. Also, improving her sharp combat skills.
What kind
of jobs will your character have in the future?
Same edge running jobs, until she meets her goals...
How do
you expect your character to die?
Two ways. Violently in pursuit of her goals, or peacefully having
achieved them.

Executive Personal Protection Program is an idea borrowed completely and
totally from Shadowrun. Basically, EPPP is about providing valuable
corporate personal, no matter the cost. EPPP agents are consummate
professionals, who are dedicated to their clients safety at all cost. They
are highly trained, and highly motivated. But most of all, they make sure
that the protection they provide only minimally infringes on the recipients
lifestyle.

Post Mark Sidestory Notes:
Although this isn't the best summary, here is what happened during the Mark Sidestory.
|
Through many strange and incredulous events, Helena was introduced to the supernatural (kicking and screaming all the way).
|
A sudden uprooting of her entire reality paradigm (You mean monsters and demons exist!?!? *insert profanity here) caused her to begin losing her mind and her carefully created demeanor...in short, it was driving her mad, and she lashed out due to it.
|
Other members of the group began spontaneously developing supernatural abilities. Helena did not. Instead, the nanites in her body rebelled at the contact with supernatural energies and events. The energies allowed the nanites to form a collective consciousness, and they promptly decided to........upgrade Helena. She became cyber-evolved, with her cyberware providing raw material for her body to become a nanotech-human hybrid. One that could fight the supernatural on even terms.
|
She engaged her nemesis, Nagano Arasaka in a facedown, and nearly won. (Helena had his dead to rights, but he managed a damn near impossible escape).
|
Some of her stability returned, and the new body she had gave her equal footing to battle that which is not...normal. |
If you want more detailed info, ask me in person.
Bob's summary is as follows:
Helena: One of the cyber evolved, living in a symbiotic relationship with the cybernetic nanites in her body.
