Deadlands Character Creation Notes

Each player draws 12 cards and decides to discard 2 of the 12 to make up your traits.  But you have to keep deuces and Jokers.  If you draw a joker tell the GM and draw a card for the trait level for that card.

Example:  If you have a queen of spades it will be a trait of d10 and a trait level of 4.

Trait level is the number of dice you roll for Trait checks.  So with the above example say you put it in strength you will roll 4d10 for a trait check.

To get the results of the rolls you roll your dice and keep the highest die.  Also if you roll the max result for your die, also called an ace, you roll again and add it to that die, you keep doing this until you don’t get the max result for the die.

Example: I roll for 4d10 for Strength and get 2, 5, 8, 10.  I re-roll the 10 and get a 10 so I re-roll it again and get a 5. So my total result is 35 for the strength check since this was the highest result.

You derive your aptitude points from your Knowledge, Smarts and Cognition die types.

Example: I have a Knowledge of d6, Smarts of d8, and a Cognition of d10.  So my aptitude points is 6+8+10=24 points toward my Aptitudes.  Aptitude points go 1 point for 1 level in the Aptitude up to a max of 5 for character generation only.

Aptitudes are rolled the same way as Trait checks.  Each aptitude is under a certain trait.  Each aptitude is like a trait level.  I you have a shootin’ Pistol aptitude at 5.  You roll 5 dice keep the highest result.  The type of dice rolled is decided by what Trait the aptitude is under.  Shootin’ Pistol is under Deftness and my deftness is 3d12 and I have Shootin’ Pistol at 5 so I will roll 5d12 and keep the highest result.

Also all aptitudes does not need to be rolled with the trait it is under.  So the Marshal(GM) can ask for a climbin’/knowledge roll.  So if your knowledge is 2d6 and your climbin’ is 4 you roll 4d6 and tell him your result.  So he asked for how much you know about climbin’.  This works with all skills.

You can also buy Edges and Hindrances but can’t buy Edges with Aptitude points.  You  have to get hindrances to get extra points to buy Edges or spend the extra points on Aptitudes.  You can only get a total of 10 extra points this way.
